Deterioration in health and beauty are usually associated with aging; however, it is possible to stay beautiful no matter your age or health status. Eating a healthy diet, exercising, taking care of your skin and practicing good oral hygiene are some of the keys to staying healthy and beautiful at any age.

Diet One important aspect of maintaining the best health possible as you age is your diet. Eating a balanced diet that is based on the USDA’s MyPlate is essential to ensure that you get all of the vitamins and nutrients your aging body needs. Generally, vegetables should be the main food group on your plate. Your portion of grains, preferably whole grains, should be slightly smaller than the vegetables.

Fruits and protein should be equal portions that are smaller than the grains. Dairy should also be included. Your diet should also be low in fat, calories, cholesterol and sodium.   Staying hydrated is an important component of your beauty ritual as you age. Water helps your body to function optimally, and it helps your skin to stay soft and supple. Find out about eating for health and beauty as you age.

Exercise Aging isn’t an excuse to lead a sedentary life unless your doctor restricts your physical activity. Ask your doctor before starting any exercise program. You need to stay active to stay healthy. Weight-bearing exercises are vital to keeping your bones strong. Aerobic exercise keeps your cardiovascular system functioning properly.

Not only will exercise help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, it also helps to promote a healthy immune system. This means that illnesses like the common cold won’t impact you like they would a person who isn’t active. Exercise also helps you to care for yourself longer since it helps you maintain a healthy mental status, and it improves your balance and flexibility. When you exercise, you gain self-confidence, and you sleep better.

These factors affect the way you carry yourself and the way you look, so exercise can help you to be more beautiful. You will likely develop a glow to your skin that gives you a radiant look. This is due to improved blood circulation as a result of exercising.

Skin Care Keeping your skin moisturized is vital as you age. Well-moisturized skin looks younger than dry skin. Choose a water-based moisturizer to avoid a greasy look that emphasizes wrinkles. It should also have an SPF of at least 30 to keep your skin protected from the sun, which helps prevent sunspots and may prevent age spots.

Oral Care Proper oral care keeps your teeth healthy and looking nice longer. Brush your teeth three times per day using a soft-bristle toothbrush, and floss daily. If you use mouthwash, choose an alcohol-free one to prevent the alcohol from damaging your tooth enamel and gums. When you are out-and-about for the day, rinse your mouth with water after you eat or drink if you don’t have a toothbrush and toothpaste handy.

10 Cancer Busters in your Kitchen


One of the most frequently asked questions I encounter when performing health screening examinations is: “Which tests can I have performed to check whether I have cancer?” As any clinician will tell you, there is no simple answer to this question.

Most imaging and diagnostic tests are usually only performed to confirm the diagnostic suspicion of cancer based on a suggestive history and clinical examination.

Most cancers are caused by a complex interaction between an existing genetic predisposition and environmental/lifestyle factors. In my opinion, a far more proactive way of approaching your cancer risk, is by examining those factors which you can actively control.

Almost half of all cancers diagnosed in the UK every year are caused by avoidable and modifiable lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and obesity. Yes, you have read that correctly, poor dietary choices and carrying too much weight can actively increase your cancer risk.

After smoking, the leading cancer risk factor in women is obesity (6.9% of cases) and in men, it’s a lack of fruit and vegetables in their diet (6.1% of cases). One of the simplest and most effective ways to promote good health and help protect against cancer is through your diet.

Let’s have a look at the foods which have the ability to stave of cancer or even inhibit cancer cell growth and reduce tumour size. Of course, the list does not cover all anti-cancer edibles, but these are my TOP 10 ALL STARS and a good starting point.

1. Broccoli, especially sprouts contain the phytochemical Sulforaphane, which can aid in the prevention of certain cancers, like colon and rectal cancer. Sulforaphane also aids in the production of certain enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens (cancer-causing substances). These enzymes have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumours in tests.

2. Spinach & Kale contain nitrogen compounds called Indoles, which may help to stop the progression of certain lesions to cancerous cells in estrogen-sensitive tissues (e.g. breast tissue). In addition, Isothiocyanates found in kale, are thought to suppress tumour growth and block cancer-causing substances from reaching their targets.
Broccoli sprouts have been developed under the trade name BroccoSprouts which contain as much as 20 times more sulforaphane than the levels found in mature heads of broccoli.

3. Carrots are a rich source of Beta carotene, which may help prevent a wide range of cancers including lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast cancers. According to researchers at Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS), a substance called Falcarinol, also abundant in carrots, has been found to reduce the rate at which tumour cells grow. Falcarinol is only present in raw carrots, and is inactivated through cooking/steaming.

4. Grapefruit and other citrus fruits, contain Monoterpenes, believed to help prevent cancer by removing carcinogens from the body. Some studies show that grapefruit may inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro.

6. Tomatoes are a rich source of Lycopene. An increased intake of lycopene has been linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer. Lycopene is concentrated by cooking tomatoes and higher quantities are present in tomato pastes and purees.

7. Raspberries contain various plant compounds and antioxidants known as Anthocyanins which may protect against cancer. According to a recent study published in Cancer Research (2001;61:6112-6119), rats which were fed diets of containing 5 to 10 percent black raspberries, saw  a decrease in the number of esophageal tumors. Research reported in the journal Nutrition and Cancer in May 2002, revealed that black raspberries may also thwart colon cancer.

8. Chilli’s contain Capsaicin, a chemical which can neutralise certain cancer-causing substances like nitrosamines and may help to prevent cancers such as stomach cancer.

9. Garlic has immune-enhancing Allium compounds (dialyl sultides) that appear to increase the activity of immune cells that fight cancer.  These substances also block carcinogens from entering cells and slow tumour development. Research published in the October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed that people who consume raw or cooked garlic regularly, face about half the risk of stomach cancer and two-thirds the risk of colorectal cancer as people who eat little or none!

10. Green Tea contains the polyphenolic substance Catechin, which appears to prevent cancer cells from dividing.  Studies have also suggested that  these polyphenols which are abundant in green tea, may protect against cancer of the stomach, lung, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas.

The Longevity Solution: Stabilized Royal Jelly

WHAT IS ROYAL JELLY?

Royal jelly is made by the glands of the nurse bees. They synthesize it from bee pollen, propolis and other things, and produce it with their enzymes. Then they secrete it into the comb and give it to the queen bee.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In 1959, in Nature magazine, research was published about the medicinal potency of royal jelly by a team of Canadian researchers from three different Canadian universities including the University of Toronto and Guelph University. Nature is one of the most prestigious research journals, and this research was extremely well conducted, very thorough and very unbiased.

They used about 1000 mice over the years. The first group of mice was injected with cancer cells; a second group of mice was injected with cancer cells combined with royal jelly. They, in effect, made a royal jelly vaccine. All of the mice injected with cancer cells developed tumours and all eventually died. The caveat is that all of the mice that got the royal jelly survived. This research led to a reaction from certain industrialists, which led to the diminution of the value of royal jelly. And so we were never really able to determine its effectiveness.
Another problem with royal jelly was quality control. Royal jelly is a natural substance and therefore it is subject to issues such as the quality of the product and the strength of the product. It is an expensive substance and there is a limited amount produced. In addition, because it is such a valuable substance, in order to keep the cost down, it is not always sold in full concentration either in a capsule or in a bottle.
Therefore, manufacturers have marketed a low quality royal jelly and the public was not able to obtain the top quality which was used by the researchers. And because the pharmaceutical industry and others felt very threatened by royal jelly, they disseminated information saying it was ineffective and did not produce results. So, it never really caught on, even though it was very popular in the 1940s, '50s and '60s. Let's revive it because it is a very important substance which can save lives and save us a lot of misery.

NUTRITIONAL PROFILE OF ROYAL JELLY

It is extremely important to look at the nutritional profile of royal jelly so you can get an idea of its power and why it works.
Royal jelly is very high in protein. It is 13% protein by weight. It is also very high in fatty acids. The most important kind of fatty acids it contains are hydroxy acids, which are necessary for the immune system.
It is also very high inphospholipids which are needed for brain function. That is why researchers are finding royal jelly useful for Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease.

European studies have shown that various skin disorders due to inflammation benefit, for example redness, hives, erythmatosis, seborrhea, eczema.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.

There is no good research on MS; however, because MS patients score a lot higher on the adrenal test than most, four capsules a day could be quite effective.

PARASITES

I know of no research on parasites, but royal jelly is effective against bacteria, fungus, and viruses. Oil of oregano is effective against parasites. Research shows that it destroys amoebas and blastocysts and we know definitely that veterinarians are using it to kill tapeworms.

HYPOTHYROIDISM

If the hypothyroidism is due to endocrine collapse, then this is a good tonic. There is no specific research on this yet.

ALLERGIES TO BEE POLLEN

Royal jelly strengthens the immune system, and that can be an issue for people who are allergic to bee stings. Therefore if they take royal jelly or bee pollen, they can react. It is quite rare with Royal Kick because it is fortified with pantothenic acid. I have never seen an adverse reaction. However, it is remotely possible. One thing you can do is open up a capsule of Royal Kick and take a small amount.

DOSAGE

What is the dosage? Four to six capsules of the Royal Kick we have found to be ideal. For the Royal Oil, use a shot under the tongue twice a day. For a nutritional supplement, you cannot beat the powers of royal jelly as a daily tonic.

ROYAL KICK, ROYAL OIL ARE STABILIZED

You can carry the Royal Oil in your pocket, and it is your lifesaver. Stabilized royal jelly is very effective, and both the Royal Kick and the Royal Oil are stabilized. There is a certain process used in the Royal Oil to stabilize it and you don't have to refrigerate it. The actual refrigerated liquid royal jelly is not stabilized. Note that the royal jelly from the health food store is cut to keep the price low, so usually it is one-third as potent as something that has been stabilized.

Longevity Recipe



Serves 5

z 500g Crisp & Chunky Coriander & Chilli Hake Fillets
z 2 cups (500ml) couscous
z 2 cups (500ml) hot water
z 1 cup (250ml) soft apricots, chopped
z ½ cup (125ml) pistachio nuts, chopped
z ¼ cup (62,5ml) pomegranate pips

Salsa 
z 1 tsp (5ml) fresh coriander, chopped
z ½ red onion, finely chopped
z 15 rosa tomatoes, finely chopped
z 1 avocado, diced
z 2 Tbsp (30ml) olive oil
z salt to taste
z freshly ground black pepper

Prepare fish according to cooking suggestions on pack. Place the couscous with two cups of hot water and a pinch of salt in a sealed container, and leave to cook for 5 minutes. Mix with a fork and add the chopped apricots, pistachio nuts and pomegranate pips.

Season accordingly. To make the salsa, mix together the coriander, red onion, tomatoes, avocado and olive oil. Season to taste. To serve, place the fish on a bed of couscous salad and top generously with salsa.

The Importance of Exercise to Combat Stress


Do you find yourself stressed over your schedule and worrying you won’t be able to get everything done in time? This can cause a large amount of mental, emotional and physical stress to an individual.

It is up to that individual how he/she wants to combat this stress, whether it be eating fatty food, drinking some alcohol, saying/doing something you’ll regret.

If you are looking for a healthy and productive way to relieve that stress, try exercising!
Exercising can go a long way in improving how you feel emotionally and physically. Working out releases what is known as endorphins in the bloodstream. Endorphins can give the individual a sense of euphoria or a general state of well-being.

So long story short, the longer you work out the more endorphins are released. The more endorphins that are released, the better you feel. It’s as simple as that!
Exercising can also help you mentally. Working out allows you to focus primarily on your body’s movements, which is very similar to the methods of people who do Tai Chi.

Allowing yourself to focus just on your breathing and your body’s movements allows your other worries and stressors to just drift away. That might be just what you needed, because when you finish working out and come back to facing that issue that was stressing you, you may find that it really wasn’t that worth getting so wound up over in the first place.

It can also put you in a great mood. By working out over an extended period of time, you will find yourself being drawn to eating healthier and moving around a lot more.
You will begin to recognize that working out makes you feel good about yourself and your life. As your body changes, so will your attitude.

Work – the death of you



University College London (UCL) has found that those who spend more than 11 hours at work a day have a 67% increased risk of having a heart attack than those who work an eight-hour day. A second study by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found that those who spend over 10 hours a day in the workplace are also twice as likely to suffer from depression, with a 2,5% higher chance of having at least one adverse depressive episode after six years.


“Research on the topic is prolific, indicating just how serious and widespread the trend has become. Already South Africa is regarded as the 3rd most workaholic nation in the world, with a 2011 study by Ipsos Global and Reuters finding that a mere 47% of the country’s working population take their allotted vacation days,” says Professor Jacques Snyman, clinical executive of Agility Channel’s Zurreal4employers programme, an integrated human capital management solution. “With a growing body of evidence irrevocably proving the link between long working hours and potentially life-threatening health complications, it becomes clear that corporate South Africa must take an increasing amount of responsibility for the health of their employees.”
The solution, says Snyman, is simple. These workaholics need to be identified early and managed through an integrated, holistic and personalised employee wellbeing programme.

He adds that employees and corporates need to take into consideration that increased input almost never results in increased output. “Typically, your best work takes place between hours two and six of a working day. By hour nine, you’re working at a fraction of your capacity, and your productivity steadily declines with each passing hour as fatigue, and eventual exhaustion, set in. The Carrot and the Stick


They say the reason  Frenchmen kiss a woman’s hands is that – to mention them...”You have to start somewhere”.
I also thought about the many ways to jerk off this stuff I like to call “secrets to staying young”, and decided that the cell is an excellent place to start.
Wrinkles, dreadful hair, quaggy arms and other visible signs of the ageing process are but an indication of what is going on inside the body, at a cellular level. We can be sure that if what we can see are those signs, then, something is starting going pretty badly in the inside.
On the other hand, a smooth, firm skin, a supple and toned body and strong passion in your marriage are all signs of vigorous body-mind state.
It has all to do with food. Nutrition determines the shape of one’s health. The food we eat can be compare with fuel. Human cells – more than 90 trillion of then, require a constant supply of nutrients on a daily basis, in order to stay healthy and provide the energy necessary for us to stay well.
The food we eat affect every cell in the body, and, therefore, every aspect of life: our mood, our thinking ability, our sex drive, our sleeping form and of course our physical appearance and general wellbeing. As the adage goes: 'We are what we eat'.,  
One of the firsts things we should do in order to change the signs of ageing is to start detoxifying the cells.
It is particularly intriguing that, in the Bible, when the creator was giving instructions to the first humans as to what was going to be their food, he mentioned plants and fruits. In Genesis 1:29 we read “ Here I have given to you all vegetation bearing seed which is on the surface of the whole earth and every tree on which there is the fruit of a tree bearing seed. To you let it serve as food.”
The structure of our teeth and jaw are for frugivores. Also, our saliva, alkaline and with ptyalin, makes it easier the pre-digestion of grains. We are clearly not carnivores by physiology – we have a body composition and digestive system ideal  for eating fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables.
Ideally then, we should be only eating raw vegetables and fruit. That is the first and surest way to slow down ageing and kick-start the rejuvenation process, but, alas, that is easier said than done. Of course, there are a few people who thrive in natural food eating, with the exclusion of all animal products and cooked foods, and they claim utterly impressive results, both in their looks and energy levels.
It is all down to knowing yourself; understanding your potential and accepting your limits. It is not easy to do that. Depending on your personal metabolism, can even be impossible to continue with a complete raw diet. It is worth to try and see what you can obtain.
Another option is to test, combining some meals of only fresh and others with little cooked food.
People who always eat animal products are susceptible to all sorts of degenerative changes in their bodies. They may be constantly victims of infections, flu and colds. On the outside, they may increasingly have sagged folds in the face and neck, flabby arms and protruding stomachs that impair their form with other distressing signs.
All these external  cues are indicative of a serious lack of power at the cellular level, and what they mean is that the body is gradually surrendering to the process of ageing.
I said at the outset that I needed to start somewhere. I think detoxifying your cells will be the first thing you  can do to establish the ageing reversing process.
How do you do that? First of all, by severely cutting back on chocolate bars, cheese, pasta, pizzas and other fatty and sugary stuff that produce toxins in your body. Of course, quitting smoking is a must too, if you smoke at all.
While you cut back on unhealthy food, try to create incorporating healthy nutrients in your meals, specially healthy fluids which will open up the process of detoxification at a cellular level.

Does an elixir of prolonged youth exists?

In a previous post, I was writing about a medical science opinion, which recognises the potential life span of people to be 120 years. I honestly wonder on how they came about to that figure. Many authors produce their opinion on people’s life prospects from a passage in the book of Genesis, in the Bible.
The text in question is Genesis 6:3 which in part says...”(man’s) days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years”. By contextual reading of this passage, it is abundantly clear that God was not dictating the greatest potential age of humanity in this verse. The whole chapter is telling us about the dreadful situation of the time, and why God had decided to wipe out that generation of evil people, and that the time limit he was going to give them before he acted was of ‘one hundred and twenty years’.
In the Bible itself, there are some examples of men and women of later times who live many years more than that.
Of course, faith plays a role in many of the things we do as humans, whether we have a religious bent or not. Even astronomers predict the existence of unseen planets or stars based on precise mathematical calculations. Faith drives the work of many scientists
Interestingly, they have faith on the reliable mathematical laws. Therefore, in answering the question: “Does an elixir of prolonged youth really exists|?”, we should approach the subject with faith based on facts.
If I were to ask you if you believe in the Lochness monster, your reply may be yes or not, but in either case, there are not valid reasons for an unexpectedly strong position on that issue. Whereas in the subject of the prolongation of life, even in this staying age, there are certain nutritional and lifestyle principles that, if applied, will have a tremendous impact on your health and wellbeing.
You will need some degree of belief tough. You will need to believe that by making some effort, not only will you not be disappointed, but you will have the exhilarating sense of success in your own body and mind. From my own personal experience, I will be explaining how you can be  in excellent health, mentally and physically.
Let me start by saying that the rejuvenation process should begin at a cellular level... I’ll be sharing with you honest secrets that will allow your body to stay clear of deceases, even though everybody else around you is falling sickly. The secrets, when applied, will act as an invisible protection against external intruders.
It will not matter how many germs attempt to colonise your system. If your blood stream is at the ideal PH level (alkalinity/acid ratio), you are safe. Of course, nobody is immune to come into contact with many germs and bacteria, but these little beasts will not hurt you, or cause disease, unless they have a comfy place to survive, thrive and reproduce themselves.
The ‘elixir of youth’ is a combination of proper nutrition, herbal tonics and supplements. These are the core components.  Ancillary to that, there are some other things that will enhance your wellbeing:  drinking clear water every day, moderate physical exercise, stretching your muscles, going for a walk and taking in sunshine and fresh air. They all work, but they actually work together with the nutrition, herbal teas and supplements.
It is essential to understand that to stay healthy, strong and cheerful, we need to take care of ourselves and not leave that to the GP. Many people - often not by their own fault, keep themselves ignorant of the fundamentals of living (eating, drinking and working) in relation to their health. In fact, the vast majority do not even think about their health until something goes wrong.
Only when sick, people become alarmed and go to the doctor. These people do not realize that what is troubling them is the result of a violation of the fundamental laws of health and wellbeing. That illustrates the importance of knowledge.
I do hope that this blog and articles that will be appearing in it will be my humble contribution to increasing awareness and knowledge about proper diet, use of fresh water, fresh air, sunshine, exercise and relaxation on one hand, and the use of proper nutrition, herbs and supplements, on the other.
Change your eating and drinking habits, modify your life according to the principles of health and wellbeing and you will have a happier and healthier life; you will keep young for longer. It is my responsibility to teach you how to do this.

Breathe for Life

Adult humans normally breathe at the rate of one breath every six to eight seconds and inhale an average of sixteen thousand quarts of air each day. If nothing is done to restrict breathing, it will happen naturally and fully. But people continually inhibit natural breathing in many ways—poor posture, tight or binding clothes, "speed eating," exposure to noxious substances, smoking, lack of exercise, plus habitual patterns of emotional stress.  

When breathing is obstructed or suppressed, the cells in the body do not receive the full amount of oxygen necessary to carry out their assigned functions. You may feel sleepy or irritable, or develop a headache. One reason that exercise is so valuable is that it forces you to breathe more fully, literally replenishing your dwindling supply of oxygen.   Hindus call it prana—the life force carried in the breath.

Many languages use the same word for both breath and spirit, or life force. In Hebrew, the word for soul or spirit is rauch. In Greek, it is pneuma. In Latin, spiritus. Each of these words also means "breath." In English, to inhale is to "inspire"—to take in the spirit. To exhale, or expire, means to release the spirit.

All of life can be observed as a taking in and a giving out, of movement and rest, of controlling and letting go. The way you breathe is an excellent metaphor for the way you live your life.   The information and exercises recommended here encourage you to start paying attention to your breathing as a form of relaxation, stress reduction, and healing.

Breath and Stress

Stress is inevitable—you need it to stand upright against the force of gravity. That’s known as eustress, or positive stress, the kind that motivates you to get a job done on time or to do something that you thought was impossible. 

When endangered by something in the environment or upset by disturbing thoughts—such as frightening expectations or memories like those associated with grief or panic—the body reacts to protect itself. It triggers a set of automatic responses, including increases in heart rate, in blood flow to the muscles, and in the rate of breathing. These responses are designed to energize the body to do battle, to run away, or to freeze.  

When the danger is real, the alarm state is necessary and important.   But there are many less dangerous forms of stress in your life that have the potential of wearing you down and causing a variety of health problems. Many people live in a constant state of alarm.

"Stress plays some role in the development of every disease," writes Hans Selye, MD, in his classic work, Stress without Distress.   If stress is balanced with relaxation or attitude-change methods, the continual surge of energy supplied by the response to stress can be modified or even channeled for creative purposes. If stress levels remain high, disease and breakdown will often result.

Take a moment to recall some of the stressful situations in your life. Are there difficult people, either adults or children? Interruptions when you’re trying to work or rest? Is there too much work, too little time? Are they driving in traffic? Smog and noise?

Exercising in your 70s 'may stop brain shrinkage'

Regular exercise protects the brain, experts suspect.

Exercising in your 70s may stop your brain from shrinking and showing the signs of ageing linked to dementia, say experts from Edinburgh University.
Brain scans of 638 people past the age of retirement show those who were most physically active had less brain shrinkage over a three-year period.
Exercise did not have to be strenuous - going for a walk several times a week sufficed, the journal Neurology says.
But giving the mind a workout by doing a tricky crossword had little impact.
The study found no real brain-size benefit from mentally challenging activities, such as reading a book, or other pastimes such as socialising with friends and family.

When the researchers examined the brain's white matter - the wiring that transmits messages round the brain - they found that the people over the age of 70 who were more physically active had fewer damaged areas than those who did little exercise.
And they had more grey matter - the parts of the brain where the messages originate.
Experts already know that our brains tend to shrink as we age and that this shrinkage is linked to poorer memory and thinking.
And previous studies have shown that exercise helps reduce the risk of dementia and can slow down its onset.
But scientists are still baffled about why this is.

'Never too late'

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients to brain cells, which may be important.
Or it may be that as people's brains shrink, they become less inclined to exercise.
Regardless of why, experts say the findings are good news because exercise is an easy thing to do to boost health.
Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "This study links physical exercise to fewer signs of ageing in the brain, suggesting that it may be a way of protecting our cognitive health.
"While we can't say that exercise is the causal factor in this study, we do know that exercise in middle age can lower the risk of dementia later in life.
"It will be important to follow these volunteers to see whether these structural features are associated with greater cognitive decline over the coming years. More research is also needed to tease out how physical activity might be having a beneficial effect."
Prof James Goodwin, head of research at Age UK, the charity that provided the funding for the research, said: "This research re-emphasises that it really is never too late to benefit from exercise, so whether it's a brisk walk to the shops, gardening or competing in a fun run it is crucial that, those of us who can, get active as we grow older."
